Small Grant Project in Surabaya

My small grant project, a.k.a. the 2013 Health Calendar Art Contest

One of the winning pieces (for hygiene)

As a Fulbright ETA, I was allowed to write one small project grant. I knew I wanted it to be related to health, but wasn’t sure about the exact project, how it would be perceived by the school, students, and my program. Some of my fellow Peace Corps volunteers in Georgia developed a healthy life skills calendar, so I decided to model my project after their brilliant idea! I chose to hold an English-related art contest where the participants learnt new health vocabulary and had the opportunity to draw or paint original artwork depicting positive healthy behavior changes for 12 different health topics. These health topics included “women’s health, exercise, and peer pressure,” among others.

It was very successful and the final product looked fantastic thanks to the graphic design styling of one of my favorite Khadijah staff!

I included three schools in the competition and the winning drawings are featured for each month’s topic. Here's another example for Peer Pressure by the same artist as above.

AMINEF's (my program- American Indonesian Exchange Foundation) Director also received a copy!
